When the Fillmore Heritage Center is completed next summer, there will be black restaurants and venues on all four corners of the intersection of Fillmore and Eddy Sts.  The center will include a Jazz Heritage Center with memorabilia of the central role of San Francisco in jazz history.
Right now, there is great public art in the murals inside the Fillmore St. Cafe just across the street from the construction site and diagonally from the St. John African Orthodox Church, where the music of John Will-I-Am Coltrane is the medium of worship.  One gets to sip on coffee or tea with the backdrop of jazz musicians.
Although it is perceived as a coffee shop, today I decided to try one of its delicious sounding sandwiches.  Even the attendant looked surprised, because my normal order is an herbal tea.
My choice was a portobello mushroom sandwich with a garden salad. It was not only scrumptious but also filling as the submarine style sandwich was split into three sections that filled most of the plate. The salad, punctuated with feta cheese, was also pretty interesting.
