Other delegates were Revs. John J. Moore, pastor of what was to become First A.M.E. Zion Church; and T.M.D. Ward, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church, both in San Francisco and founded in 1852. Those churches, with Third Baptist in San Francisco, also founded in 1852 and other A.M.E. churches in Coloma, Marysville, Stockton, Grass Valley, Nevada City and St. Andrews in Sacramento provided the meeting places and the leadership for African-Americans who had migrated to California after the Gold Rush. The original site of St. Andrews just blocks from the State Capitol and the original site of Third Baptist, one block from Coit Tower, are both State Historic Sites.
