Indiana’s black businesses have doubled in number during the past seven years, according to the annual analysis provided in the State of Black Business series presented by eAccess Corp., creator of National Black Business Month.
Notable companies include the casino interests in Gary of mega-entrepreneur Don Barden, Mays Chemical Co, the auto dealership of former NFL running back Eric Dickerson and architect Henry Onochi.
In 1997, there were 6,603 black firms in the state. In 2004, the last year for which statistics are available, the number grew to 13,889.   The number of female-led companies grew fastest-- from 3,412 in 1997 to 8,013 in 2004.  Male-headed companies grew from 3,191 to 5,876 from 1997 to 2004.
Indiana was rated ninth on the black business affinity index in the State of Black Business report, which measures states by the number and extent of black entrepreneurship, the diversity of industries, the support from executive leadership, laws in place to develop African-American-owned business and actual contracting from governmental and private companies.
